May 2007Young Alumni Connection
A note for our regular readers: We hope you enjoy the memories of graduation day and perhaps learn about a benefit or two that you might not have known about before. Thanks for reading - we'll resume with our usual content next month. We're also on MySpace - get connected today!
HA HA YOU'RE OLD NOW TOOWelcome New Alumni! You've now become an official member of one of the most active, engaged and fiercely loyal alumni associations in the country. As for what's next, well, that's up to you! We'll do our best to keep in touch with you, just so long as you tell us your new address. Take the time to attend social and professional events run by LUAA and your local alumni club to expand your circle of friends. Feeling generous with your time? You might consider a volunteer opportunity - we've got plenty of those available too. Lehigh is about opening your eyes to opportunity. Life after Lehigh is about making the most of the ones you get. Welcome to the family. Do great things!
Graduation Day AdviceWe've rounded up some advice from alumni specifically pertaining to what to do and what not to do on graduation day. Some folks got a little carried away and shared stories from their memorable day as well. Got more stories or words of advice? Send them in! We'll get 'em posted somewhere...
Things you should do:- Tell your parents to sit on the AWAY side of the stadium. Sure, the home side looks nicer (oooh...chairbacks), but the sun will cook them to a nice lobster-red long before they see you shake Dr. Gast's hand. - Check your gown the night before. If you have multiple gowns in the same house/room/closet, mark them with something - otherwise a 6'2" guy might end up with his 5'6" girlfriend's gown (true story!). "We left for graduation at separate times, couldn't find each other at the stadium and as a result looked ridiculous. I have pictures to prove it." - Wear sunscreen. I know it's been put in that lame song, but trust me on this one. You will get burned. Don't forget the inflatable beach ball either.
Things you should not do:- Do not take off your gown during the ceremony. It just doesn't look good. Stay classy, Lehigh grads... - Do not drink too much the night before. It may be tempting to "blow it out" one last time, but trust me...at 8AM when you're assembling for the ceremony you'll feel less than fantastic on the one day you should feel 100% awesome. Besides, the person next to you doesn't want to have to keep you propped up all morning.
Fun stories:- Before you walk across the stage, you'll hand the announcer a card with your name on it, spelled phonetically if it's hard to pronounce. I wrote mine as "Nancy Rahk-stahr Kah-net-ski" so the announcer would say "Nancy Rockstar Kanetsky." The entire place was laughing...and President Farrington even muttered "THAT'S going to be a tradition!" My dad was never so proud. - I was sitting on the stage next to Katie Couric. After her speech, she passed me a note that asked "do you think everyone got my 'Ho' joke?" It was an amazing moment...completely sentimental and surreal at the same time.
Tips for New GradsThis Washington Post article has some great advice for your transition to "the real world". Keep your eyes open for a new service being developed by the Young Alumni Council called "Transitions" soon. This new website will have a TON of information on how to find an apartment, handle investments, buy a car, fill out a W4 and stay involved with Lehigh wherever you end up. Until then, check out the WaPo for some pretty solid info!
