February 2006Young Alumni Connection
CAMPUS HAPPENINGSA Time of ChangeDuring his State of the University Address last fall, Greg Farrington announced his plans to resign as President of Lehigh University. After serving eight years, Lehigh's 12th president will step down in June 2006, but he will not step out of the picture. Both President Farrington and his wife Jean plan on staying involved at Lehigh, as he will hold the board-appointed role of Distinguished University Service Professor, and she will continue her work on the Linderman renovation project. "Part of the reason I can feel comfortable in stepping down at this point is that I believe that making such a change during a period when the university is enjoying remarkable success across virtually all areas of the institution will help preserve the momentum of Lehigh’s progress" Farrington wrote in an e-mail. Finding the right person to keep that momentum alive is a task not to be taken lightly. read more IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOODJoin the Club!Happy hours, sporting events, networking opportunities, meeting alumni in your area...sound interesting? You more than likely went to one or more of these events in the past few months if you’re active in your local area Lehigh Club. Not only have the clubs been busy with alumni, but the boundaries of club involvement have been extended to current and incoming students as well. read more ALUMNI PROFILESCarey Smith '95Like many young alumni, Carey Smith '95 found himself drifting away from Lehigh in the first few years after graduation. Until, that is, a strange meeting with a venture capitalist gave him a fresh new perspective on his degree. As Smith was trying to raise money for a business idea a few years
ago, he recalls walking in to meet with one potential investor who quickly
got down to brass tacks. "We shook hands and I handed him my resume,"
Smith recalls, "and the moment he noticed that I had gone to Lehigh, he
said, 'Okay, you have whatever funds you need.'" SMALL CHANGE, BIG IMPACTFive dollars.A pitcher at McGrady's, a Gander from the Goose or a quick stop at Starbucks and it's gone. Might we suggest putting it towards something more rewarding, like a scholarship? Over 70 young alumni have made their first gift to Lehigh in the past year- and this wasn't a Senior Class Gift either. They are a part of the over 400 young alumni who have made a gift through the Latte website in the past year, raising over $50,000 that has gone primarily to scholarships. What made some of these first-time donors pull out their Lehigh Alumni credit card and make a gift? "Lehigh has given me some of my best friends in the world, a great education, and a well rounded 4 years that has prepared me for life after college. It's my way of saying thank you." Another young alum said simply "I love the place."
