2006 Club Report

October 2007

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,

2007 has been another fantastic year for the Lehigh Club of Pittsburgh! From our 2nd Annual Networking/Pub Night at Claddagh's on the South Side in May to our Class of 2011 Sendoff at the home of Laura Kronk '82 in August, alumni from all over the Western Pennsylvania region have been able to get together, socialize and catch up with old friends.

This year the Lehigh Club of Pittsburgh hosted many different events in locations throughout the city, and alumni came together for club meetings to discuss future events and brainstorm on getting more alumni involved.

On that note, Laura Plunkett '05 and Kurt Lesker IV '05 planned and hosted the Lehigh and Friends Golf Scramble at Butler’s Golf Course in Elizabeth, PA in July. The scramble was considered by all to be a resounding success and Laura and Kurt plan to make this outing an annual event. On September 19, the club hosted a review of Beat the Odds: Avoid Corporate Death & Build a Resilient Enterprise, a book published in February 2007 by Robert Rudzki ’75 about the Nine Principles needed to avoid corporate death, and ensure long-term organizational health. The club hosted its first dinner meeting at Six Penn Kitchen restaurant on October 2. This year the club also created its first Web site: www.lehighclubofpittsburgh.org, which is constantly updated to reflect upcoming events.

Personally, I would like to thank all of the volunteers that make the Lehigh Club of Pittsburgh a success, especially our outgoing president Greg Casten ’87. During his five-year tenure, Greg was often referred to as a “one-man show” and for good reason. While Greg was president, he helped our area’s Lehigh/Lafayette Telecasts really grow and thrive; they are now very successful annual events in which Lehigh and Lafayette alumni and their families enjoy the celebrated gridiron classic together. Greg also developed and organized our club’s Annual Networking/Pub Night. Greg is a truly great club leader and his tireless efforts on behalf of the club are most appreciated. Although he is continuing on the Board of Directors, he will be sorely missed as president and I hope to do a good job filling such large shoes!

I would also like to remind alumni from all over the Western Pennsylvania region that we are always looking for new volunteers at every level. The Club is constantly looking for new ways and activities to engage our fellow alumni. Please help us keep you connected by visiting http://www.lehighalumni.com/go/pbghsurvey and giving your feedback!

2008 promises to be an exciting year for the Lehigh Club of Pittsburgh! I look forward to seeing you at an event soon!

Sincerely,

Cindi Crookston ’02

YEAR IN REVIEW

The Lehigh Club of Pittsburgh has had an amazingly successful year to date. Coming into the fall season, there have been many new events, as well as tried-and-true favorites:

November 2006
Lehigh/Lafayette Telecasts
Our successful event where Lehigh and Lafayette alumni and their families enjoy the celebrated gridiron classic together at a Pittsburgh sports bar.

May 2007
Networking/Pub Night
A fun evening, enjoyed by younger and older alumni alike at The Claddagh Irish Pub in the newly developing SouthSide Works where J&L Steel's mills once made and processed steel.

July 2007
Lehigh and Friends Golf Scramble
It was a fantastic day (and night) out on the links! Teams of Lehigh alumni and friends played against and with each other in this friendly golf competition. At night, the club hosted a barbecue.

Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Games
Sometimes preceded by a tailgate party, these games always provide good Pirates baseball at Pittsburgh's new PNC Park, host of the 2006 All Star Game. We hope to revive this event in 2008!

August 2007
Incoming Student Sendoff
We welcomed the Class of 2011 in August at an event well-attended by members of the Class of 2011, their families, alumni and LUAA representatives. A heartfelt thank you to the generous Laura Kronk '82 for hosting us at her Sewickley Heights home.

September 2007
Book Review
The club hosted a book review of Beat The Odds: Avoid Corporate Death and Build A Resilient Enterprise, written by Lehigh alumni Robert Rudzki ’75. The book was published in February 2007, and the club enjoyed learning about Rudzki’s Nine Principles needed to ensure long-term organizational health.

October 2007
Board Meeting
The Six Penn Kitchen was the location of our club’s first dinner meeting! We look forward to more meetings at different downtown restaurants in the near future. Meeting minutes are also available on our Web site, www.lehighclubofpittsburgh.org.

November 2007
Lehigh/ Lafayette Telecast
While it might not have been the most victorious occasion for the Mountain Hawks, the Lehigh Club of Pittsburgh gathered to celebrate the 143rd meeting of these gridiron rivals.
